La figura del asesino serial es recurrente en el cine de horror, muchas películas inspiradas en asesinos reales han hecho historia en el cine. La más icónica es Psycho (Hitchcock, 1960), basada en la novela homónima de Robert Bloch, que fue inspirada en los asesinatos cometidos por Ed Gein (Wisconsin, 1906-1984). Ed Gein también inspiró la aclamada The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Tob Hopper, 1974), entre muchas otras.
